Amendments in the Motor Vehicles Act, 2019: Introduced stricter penalties for offenses involving juveniles:
If a minor is caught driving a vehicle, both the guardian/owner of the vehicle will be held responsible.
The vehicle owner and the guardian can face imprisonment of up to 3 years, along with a fine of Rs. 25,000.
The juvenile involved will be tried under the Juvenile Justice Act, and the vehicle’s registration can be canceled for 12 months.
The minor will also be ineligible for a driving license until the age of 25 years.
Consequences for Guardians and Owners:
If the guardian or the vehicle owner knowingly allows a minor to drive, they will be charged with negligence and can face strict legal consequences.
Parents or guardians must ensure that minors do not have access to keys or vehicles under their supervision.
